Zero lessons from Total Quality Management

John Elkington has continued to work on his new book, The Zeronauts. Much progress was made earlier in the year during the first stage of his fellowship at the Bellagio Center, thanks to the Rockefeller Foundation. With the almost-simultaneous award of the Spencer Hutchens Jr. Medal from the American Society for Quality (ASQ), John was spurred to investigate the history of Total Quality Management (TQM) in relation to the zero agenda, particularly the lessons learned during the Zero Defects movement. He covered the theme in a recent Guardian blog. He has been helped in the task by Amanda Feldman, an American who recently finished her MPA at the London School of Economics—and who, after a stint with Tata in India, has now joined the Volans core team.
