Snapshot: Bunker Roy is an Indian social activist and educator. In 1972, he founded Barefoot College in Tilonia, Rajasthan. Barefoot College turns rural school dropouts into “barefoot” doctors, engineers, architects, teachers and IT specialists, bringing the benefits of improved technologies to hundreds of thousands across India. The College has innovated in the area of rainwater harvesting and has trained barefoot engineers to install and maintain solar energy systems that provide electricity to millions of customers earning less than 2 dollars a day. Roy and Barefoot College have been the recipients of numerous international awards as a result of the pioneering work.
