OPENS Framework

We have developed this framework to guide research, pilot projects and workshops aimed to help leaders in the public, private and citizen sectors navigate and co-create evolving markets, aligning in support of innovative solutions to social and environmental challenges.

The ‘OPENS’ framework locates innovative solutions in one of 5 stages of development:

  1. identification of the Opportunity, in the context of a market failure;
  2. development of Prototype solutions, experimenting and learning;
  3. formation of Enterprises, business models and organizations;
  4. evolution of a Networks for change, creating connections and partnerships across sectors;
  5. transformation at the System level, mainstreaming solutions in the market.

The framework identifies the types of leadership required for moving between stages, as well as the enablers and the barriers likely to be found. It also maps the trajectories that different sectors – including incumbent businesses, investors and governments – can take at each stage, thereby suggesting strategies for engagement and market development.

Accompanying tools, such as an assessment guide, is also under development, designed to help users benchmark their progress against these stages and identify the necessary next steps.

Please contact John Elkington or Alejandro Litovsky for further information or to express an interest in taking part.
